Gordon In as Coach

Islanders have hired Scott Gordon to replace Ted Nolan as coach.

Good move by Snow, and really a good summer in my opinion. Gordon is a defense first coach, which is a good thing because we're not sure where the scoring will come from, and our defense, when healthy, can compete with anybody. We also have DP.

Success Stories?

I would like to explain why i would say that those coaches were successes.

For Laviolette, and Sterling: Both picked by Milbury, however, at the wrong time. We had just received an infusion of veterans from that draft with Aucoin, Peca, and Yashin, amongst others. If I really wanted to win for the now, i would've gone with a more experienced coach that would have handled Laviolettes' and Sterlings' second seasons differently. The fact that two "AHL" coaches were able to take that team to the playoffs, with that veteran core, in my opinion, is a success. Their lack of NHL coaching experience in terms of holding the team together, led to their firings their next years, again in my opinion.

Nolan: was hired at the right time, and took them into the playoffs the first year. But as the Islanders realized last summer, they weren't going to get better experienced players, they needed to get younger and build a team from scratch. Nolan didn't want that, which brings us today.

I believe that the next coach will be starting to develop and mentoring more this year than actually coaching. As the team grows, so will the coach. Good time for Gordon. Read a lot about him, and I'll comment on him later.

Coaching Search Continues

I think all Snow is really looking for is stability, and a clear view and destination for this organization that the new coach will buy into, and follow. Let's review for a moment:

Laviolette, and Sterling: Both AHL coaches before coming to the Islanders, and both took their teams to at least one playoff birth. I call that success.

Nolan: former NHL coach of the year, and a 10 year absence: Playoffs once.

Now, the remaining three candidates:

Hartley, Maurice: have the capacity to coach a team to compete/win a Stanley Cup.

Scott Gordon, could be the next Laviolette.

When we get the talent for any of these coaches, I'll bet they'll do their job.

What Garth needs to figure out is which one will be more loyal to his vision, and philosophy.

Hartley Next Up For Interview

Former Atlanta coach Bob Hartley is scheduled to meet with Islanders general manager Garth Snow about the head coaching vacancy on Wednesday, according to an NHL source. Hartley will be the second candidate to interview, but he and Snow won’t have to waste time with any get-to-know-you formalities.

Frans Neilsen on Board

Restricted free-agent center Frans Nielsen reached agreement with the Islanders Friday night on a four-year contract worth $2.1 million. It has a one-way provision in each year of the deal, virtually assuring Nielsen will be on the NHL roster.

Now all that remains is Bruno Gervais to complete the roster.

Bergie and Tambs Resigned

Forward Sean Bergenheim, who was the only Islander to file for arbitration, avoided a hearing when he reached agreement today on a two-year deal worth $1.725 million. It appears Bergenheim’s recent decision to change agents facilitated the process.

Forward Jeff Tambellini, whose difficulty breaking into the Islanders’ lineup the past two seasons under Ted Nolan, came to symbolize the former coach’s resistance to a youth movement, agreed today on a two-year deal worth $1.175 million.

Let the youth movement FINALLY begin.

Nolan Gone As Coach

The two-year marriage of inconvenience between Islanders general manager Garth Snow and coach Ted Nolan ended today. Irreconcilable differences over the direction of the franchise led to a mutual decision by Snow and Nolan, who met earlier this morning at Nassau Coliseum, to part ways.

Not going to comment this until after I find out who the next coach of the Islanders will be. Like the draft, there is more to this story, and it ends with the hiring of a new head coach. Nolan did not want to coach younger players, instead, favoring the veterans, which does not fit the "Plan" Snow is currently implementing. More to come later.

Put Up Or Shut Up For Nolan

This Nolan vs Snow debate must stop. Nolan had his chance with his veterans last year, and did not make the playoffs, granted injuries can be used but only so far. When you have a beat up team, and you have fresh, unproven, young players, use them to their fullest potential. Nolan did not do that last year.

Now we still have unproven players because of their limited use of ice time from last year, less veterans on this team, and he's forced to coach with the team he has now. Good for the kids.

Nolan brought this on himself. Had he used the kids when they were available more, Snow would already know by now who is ready for the NHL and who still needs work, or whether Snow should part ways with a young player.

Nolan actually gets three veterans this year because i believe Sim is a new free agent ready to play a full season, so Nolan is getting as many veterans as he did last year.

Snow has put Nolan in a position where Nolan has a play making center, and a powerplay quarterback defensman for the young players to learn from. If Nolan can't get this team to even stay in the hunt past December, then he does not deserve a contract extension.

A good coach learns to accept what he has, and can adapt to his players in order for the team to win.

Snow has already proven he has the potential to be a great GM by addressing the needs of the organization this year. Nolan needs to prove to the Islanders that he can adapt without comments, and let his coaching ability do the talking, cause that's the only skill that will get Nolan a new extension.

Bergenheim Got Smart!!!!

Forward Sean Bergenheim, who is the only Islander to file for arbitration, has fired his agents, Mark Gandler and Todd Diamond. General manager Garth Snow was notified of the change earlier this week and just began negotiations that potentially could avert a hearing. Snow declined to name Bergenheim’s new agent.

Gandler is FINALLY out of snow's hair. No More Yashin, or Gandler. Smart move by Bergenheim to get himself started into settling into a long term deal to stay on the Island....hopefully.

Witt Signs Extension

In the 59 games he was healthy enough to play last season, defenseman Brendan Witt probably ranked as the Islanders' most valuable player. General manager Garth Snow rewarded Witt for his toughness and experience with a two-year contract extension worth $6 million, the team announced last night.

The new deal means Witt will be an Islander through the 2010-11 season. His current contract calls for him to make $3 million this season. The upgrade in the next two seasons will put Witt on a par with Andy Sutton as the second-highest paid defenseman on the team behind free-agent acquisition Mark Streit, whose deal pays him an average of $4.1 million to quarterback the power play.

Witt missed the final 11 games of the season with a sprained medial collateral ligament that bothered him throughout the season. When he was on the ice, Witt always was matched against the opponents' top line, and he brought a snarl to the chore.

The 33-year-old defensive defenseman isn't exactly part of the Isles' youth movement, but his leadership in his role as alternate captain is important. Witt also was the Islanders' Masterton Trophy nominee last season for his perseverance and dedication to hockey, and he was active in charitable efforts, regularly hosting children battling cancer at Islanders games.

Big Year For Nolan

The bottom line to Nolan is this:

He's in his final year of his contract. He needs to make himself look good to the rest of the NHL by doing what he needs to do with the Islanders, and that's coach the heck out of this team to their fullest potential.

If he does that, and the Islanders management feels that they should move in another direction, then at least he made an effort, and should be considered for other coaching positions.

If he does not coach to his fullest because of disagreements with Snow, and he's fired as Steady already has predicted during this season, he'll have trouble getting another job coaching in this league again.

This is all up to Nolan. If he coaches his heart out, he'll be a consideration to coach again if not with the Islanders.

First off....Happy Fourth of July everybody!!!!!

Ponder this today.......Boyle on the trade block. We should go after him. Would put us in a great spot defensively.

For me, Boyle/McCabe....not much of a difference in terms of no-trade clauses, McCabe is prob more money, and either one would improve this teams overall defense just for the simple fact either one could play more games than Martinek and Gervais combined.

I'll bet you this: If Toronto does not sign Sundin to a contract, and we can't get Boyle, the Isles will go after McCabe.

Toronto will lose without Sundin, and want McCabe gone. Why not accommodate a team that is not going anywhere but down, and give them cap space on second tier players this year of what's left in the free agent market?

I'm not saying I want this to happen, but don't be surprised.

Bring On Training Camp

Lots of players at training camp means lots of competition. Weight being signed, helps solidify the center position for this year. By next year, Walter or Neilson, and Bailey should make their mark.

Signing Streit improves the powerplay immensely. He can pass and shoot, so the Islanders need to get bodies to the goal.

Reuniting Geurin with Weight will not give us great numbers, but if Tambellini learns from those two and produces, it will certainly be a good year for the Islanders.

Weight-ing For Doug Is Now Over

Well-traveled 37-year-old center Doug Weight just signed a one-year contract with the Islanders. The deal is worth $1.75 million plus performance bonuses that could push the value to $4.3 million. Weight spent last season in Anaheim, where he had 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 point sin 67 games. Islanders general manager Garth Snow added an older pivot in the hopes that he not only will be a solid playmaker for the team’s young wingers but also serve as a mentor.

Weight-ing For Doug

It’s possible something could get done with the 37-year-old Weight because he’s viewed by the Isles as a veteran who could make a difference in the development of the young wingers in the organization.

Alright, maybe a one year deal. But this means Hilbert, and Walter, and Colliton would be on the waiver wire, or trade bait. Stay tuned.

Streit Signed

The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Mark Streit to a five-year contract. Last year with Montreal, Streit played in 81 games and scored 13 goals with 49 assists for 62 points. A specialist on the power play, Streit scored seven goals with 27 assists for 34 points on the man advantage.

Bates Bought Out

The Islanders are expected to make it official Friday morning when they announce their decision to buy out the remaining year of his contract.

Bates was scheduled to make $1.2 million, but under NHL buyout provisions, he will receiver two-thirds of that amount in equal installments of $400,000 spread over the next two seasons. Last season, Bates appeared in only two games, and he was limited to 48 games the previous season by a groin injury and hernia surgery.

Islanders general manager Garth Snow portrayed the move as another step toward a youth movement. “It was a tough decision because Shawn was a great Islander, and he scored some pretty big goals in the past,” Snow said. “It was a decision based primarily on creating a spot on the roster for a younger player.”

Saw this one coming, as six other youngsters were qualified contracts. Tambs, Neilson, Walter, Gervais, Bergenheim, and, Colliton should be on the roster this year. With the Free Agency picking up steam soon, look for Hilbert to be the odd player out come training camp.

Thoughts After The Draft

Well this has been an interesting weekend for sure. I had to work all weekend long, and there was no need to post anything on Friday night, but when I read each trade down, the drafting of Bailey, realizing the amount of picks, i didn't want to burst out just yet. Then after work on Saturday, I found out who Snow had drafted.

I loved the Trivino, and Ness picks, because they were on my "wish list" before the draft started, so i was immediately thrilled. But I was droooling over Petrov, and then Toews. To finish, drafting Niemi was outstanding. By far a great draft weekend for the Islanders. Yes I was on the Wilson bandwagon as well, but time will tell.

Thoughts On Draft Day

Okay, here I go with my thoughts on draft day. Since i'll be working for the rest of this week, I may not have time to do this later.

Above the the Islanders, only the Kings are rumored to being interested in Filatov. If the Kings do take him, I think the Islanders will likely pick Pietrangelo, since he'll probably be the remaining top defenseman, the Islanders have been looking at.

If Filatov, is available for the Islanders, and if the Islanders don't want Filatov, then the only team I'd be willing to trade with would be Phoenix. They hold the 8th pick overall, and have a few assets, the Islanders could use.

I would trade the 5th overall pick, and Gervais for LW/RW Vrbata (assuming he would agree to sign with the Islanders), Ballard (Powerplay Quaterback, top 4 d-man potential) and their first round pick. With the 8th pick, i would go with Hodgson, if Wilson was not available.

If Phoenix does not want to trade, drafting either Filatov or Wilson improves the depth chart.

Dont trade with Toronto. They're a financial mess, keep them that way. Columbus is looking to trade down and get some proven players, so they're building for "Now." Phoenix is losing Vrbata to free agency, and have enough powerplay quaterbacks, in Jovanowski, and Morris. The key to my trade is Vrbata if he agreed to sign with the Islanders.

We'll see.

Yahin Coming Back?

Going after Yashin does not make any sense at all. It does not fit the "Plan" that Snow is trying to implement. Yashin's agent is probably looking for the same amount last year, and he won't get it from anyone else again. Plus Yashin's agent put a time limit on the Islanders......not a good business move. No one from the Islanders replied to Newsday's article either. Not buying into it.

Islanders Draft and Future

If the Islanders are truly going to build through the draft, then there is no doubt they will be keeping this pick. As far as free agency goes, i wouldn't expect a lot of signings if the young players are going to get the ice time. Personally, i would go after 3 players: Huselius or Vrbata, for the top wing position. and Liles from Colorado for a top 4 defenceman. If Snow cannot get either of those players, then this draft is even more important for our future. The organization got a wake-up call last year with free agents turning them down, even though a lot of money was thrown their way. Keep the pick, draft well, and attempt to get those players. Then you have something to build on.

Dubie, Others Will Not Be Resigned

According to multiple sources, Dubie, Satan, Fedotenko, and Vasicek will not be resigned for next season. Dubie will be replaced by Joey MacDonald, the goaltender from Bridgeport, while the other fore-mentioned names will be replaced by players in the system or via free agency.

Most people saw this coming, even Dubie not resigning. MacDonald has a one way contract this year, so Dubie was going to walk to begin with. As for the others mentioned, good luck to them.

Plans Are Going Well After Rally

Some people still are thinking that the team will be sold or moved or both. Here's my response.

Don't move the team.....Build it!!!!

See if the new plans for the parking lot do in fact become a reality, then we as Islanders Fans will be witnessing two things in the same time period:

a) a renovated state-of-the-art arena, and facility

b) a renovated team contending for a cup.

Snow is making the right moves by drafting and signing younger players, and this draft will have an HUGE effect on this franchise because of the amount of talent level.

If the Plans are approved that will also attract the free agents to want to play here.

Islanders fans need to give this promising dream become reality before jumping ship.

Spring Signings This Summer

Since the regular season has ended, the Islanders have been busy signing some future prospects to add more depth to the organization. It remains to be seen if these prospects turn into NHL stars. Some of these players include:


Jack Hillen: he played 2 games against the Rangers before graduating from Colorado College.
He's a puck moving defensman, and from what I've been able to gather, he reminds me of a Matt Schneider (former Islander).




Rob Hennigar: A center, Hennigar is a playmaking center who led and broke the team record in assists with 43, playing for the University of New Brunswick. He also captured the Canadian College Player of the Year.


Tomas Marcinko: 2006 4th round draft pick signed a three year entry level contract. Marcinko recorded 36 goals and 47 assists for 83 points in 104 career games in the OHL. From what I've been able to find, he's a good two-way forward with tons of experience from the World Junior Tournament games.




Robin Figren: 2006 3rd round pick, will be playing in the Swedish Elite league in 2008-2009.“We’ve seen Robin grow and develop into one of our top prospects over the past two seasons,” said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. “He’ll spend a season in the Swedish Elite League, which is one of the top hockey leagues in the world, and as an organization we’re very comfortable with that. His development will only grow while playing with Djurgardens.”

Joel Rechlicz: The 6-4, 220 pound right winger is projected to be a tough as nails type of player and will bring toughness to the organizational depth chart.

It feels like we went in reverse order here.

We signed a bunch of free agents last off season
We developed a few prospects this year in Bergenheim and Comeau
and now we get to select quite a few picks in a very deep draft.

Was Garth supposed to go in order?

Bridgeport Could Make A Splash

I'm actually excited to see what Bridgeport can do over their last six remaining games. We haven't had a team this deep down their since 2001-2002 and they went to the Finals and lost the final game in double OT to Chicago. Back then Hunter, Krog, Toress, and DiPietro were on that team. If they make into the playoffs, they could really make a splash, and would gain some big experience.

Final Game Tonight

The Islanders play there final home game against the Islanders tonight at Madison Square Garden. The Islanders have secured the 5th spot in the entry draft, which will be televised on Monday. As of now the Islanders have a 8.1% percent chance of getting the first overall pick, but should be able to pick no worse than 6th. St. Louis and Columbus play two games against each other, which may allow the Islanders to be 4th. Either way, the Islanders will get an NHL ready player in this years draft.

Before the draft order, I will post the available players for the Islanders, and pick whom I think will most benefit the Islanders.

Keep Tambellini

I know we've talked about Comeau and Bergenheim, and their progression, but i'm going to make a case for Tambellini to stay. Now before i get ripped for this, let me add that i've done some research to support my claim.

First I took the players drafted in the first round of 2003 (Tambs was 27th overall), and I found out how many points they had scored in their first 82 games. Some took a few seasons to get to 82, some went in their first year playing.

Then I found out what each player was averaging after their first 82 games and found that their was an average of 70% increase in points production from their first year (which included their first year).

My point is this. Tambs still has not played a full 82 games in the NHL. We've seen Nilsson improve over in Edmonton cause he's getting the games in. Take a look at Bergenheim, and you'll see the numbers improve also after his first 82 games.

If Tambellini was given a roster spot next year, and a big confidence booster from this organization, 30 points out of him in his first year is not out of the question. Depending who he lines up with, he could do more.

Just making a case. Now time to get ripped =)

This Is Berards Time

Now that Bergeron has been shipped out west. It is time for Bryan Berard to NOW (not in the 1990's) lead this team on the power play, and on defense. He was givin a chance when nobody else wanted him. He wanted to come here, to play here, to prove to others he can still play in this league.

Granted he was benched in place of Bergeron. Then when the injuries started piling up, he got the call to play. Now it's just him, his way, his time, his renaissance.

Watch for Berards +/- go upward with a more defensive minded Davison playing with him at full strength, and look for Johnson to keep the puck more in the offensive zone, instead of losing it on the power play (Bergeron).

Time For Support

Let's not forget we do have a lot of season ending injuries to this team. We've lost a full line (Bates, Sillinger, Sim) on offense, and Campoli on defense, which is really hurting us,
We are getting Witt back, and that will help out defensively. Me personally, I would really like to see Berard shine on the powerplay, and mentor Johnson, and even Meyer a little. We need more bodies out in front of the net for the PP to be succesful.

I also like the idea of Simon going and Tambs coming in just for the sake of having two lines that are scoring threats. Ironically, those two lines (the Bridgeport line and the Fed-Hunter-Vasicek) have been the most consistent recently.

The next month and a half are HUGE not only for the kids, but for this organization. The fans got what they wanted in that the kids are now here with the big club, and this team will go as far as the kids can help them. If we are still in the hunt by the end of March, Islander fans should be optimistic about the posssibility of a playoff berth, despite a long list of injuries, and that we have a ton of picks for the first three rounds in this years upcoming draft.
Let's be grateful for what we have, and support this team. The upper management heard our call in the young kids, now they're here. Start cheering and watch or go to the games.

Looking atwhat happened to the Islanders today, i would say that this was more of a "garbage" dump, then a salary dump.

The Islanders got a few more picks, and now Tambellini was recalled to replace Simon, which was the plan all along.

The Islanders also unloaded on Bergeron, who did not mix well with the coaches and team.

Now the kids are here to stay. Let's see how they do the rest of this season.

Sillinger To Have Season Ending Surgery

Mike Sillinger has opted to have hip surgery and will be out the rest of this season.

This is a huge blow to the Isanders. I think that winger the islanders need is now more precedent then ever, so Hilbrt can go back to the center position, and try to make up some of the faceoffs he have been losing.

And Now We Wait

Islanders lost yesterday 4-2 to the Devils. Now players and fans will watch or read with bated breathe, and imagine what Garth Snow may or may not do the next 2 1/2 days. The Islanders don't play again until Tuesday after the deadline is over, which means all the fans have to look forward to is nervousness with the possible transactions.

The Islanders need a scoring winger for the first line. If that can happen, I wouldn't be surprised to see another winning streak and a jump into the playoffs.

If they can improve on defense, then they need to make sure he is not injury prone.

Finally, racking up a few more picks for this years and next years draft also wouldn't hurt them.

The players who are unrestricted at the end of the year need to make a decision on whether or not they want to be Islanders.

Due to the winning streak and good chemistry, and our upcoming schedule, 'm really not surprised by this. Look for Satan and Fedotenko to be named in a lot of rumors.

The Isles are trying to re-sign C Mike Comrie, who is scheduled to become a UFA. GM Garth Snow said he has been pleased with Comrie's play and the two sides are looking at a long-term contract.

This is a good move by both sides. Comrie's putting up legit numbers, and he wants to be an Islander.

Sutton Out; Fata Recalled

Defenseman Drew Fata was recalled today from Bridgeport to take the roster spot of Andy Sutton, who suffered a pulled hamstring at the end of the Islanders’ 3-2 comeback victory over San Jose Monday afternoon at the Coliseum. Sutton is expected to be out 4-6 weeks with a partially torn hamstring.

I don't think Snow is going to keep this line up for his defence like this. I wouldn't be surprised if a player was picked out of waivers, or a deal cold be made sooner rather than later to improve on this defence.

Islanders Are Sellers?

While Fletcher is among the busiest GMs at the meetings, he's not alone. The Kings, Islanders, Lightning, Blue Jackets and Oilers are all expected to be sellers.

I agree with all those teams except for the Islanders. They're too close to the playoffs and from the looks of things in the East, any team is beatable this year.
The Isladers need to make the playoffs in order to generate more revenue and support for the Lighthouse Project that the Islander fans so desperatly need.

Islanders Win Four in A Row

Now this is going to be tough on Snow to trade anybody. If they still had lost, this would be a no-brainer, and you would start a fire sale.....nope. With the deadline approaching and the general managers meeting presently going on, Islander fans can only imagine what Snow may do....my opinion, he may do othing at all, and ride the wave.

Also there is a rumor just starting tonight that Cliff Fletcher from Toronoto has contacted Snow about McCabe and possibly trading him back to Long Island, and I'm looking into it.

To Trade Or Not To Trade

With just 7 games remaining before the trade deadline, Islanders GM garth Snow has some decisions to make between now and Feburary 26th. He has younger players ready to play; and some of the veterans who are not performing well throughout the season, but cannot send them anywhere. Who then will he trade, and, even more important, what can we get for these veterans?

The only player we could trade with any kind of value is Satan. We may be able to get a player playing in the NHL now, and a possible pick for him, but that would also mean, he would have to wave his no-trade clause. The other players of interest maybe Hunter, and Comrie, but they may be resigned. As far as any other player, any draft pick will probably be taken for them.

Look for the draft picks to be in 2009 not 2008 because of a deep draft pool for this year.

Colliton Recalled; Satan Sits

I'm personally going to be intrigued about how well all the Bridgeport kids play the next few games. I'm not concerned really about the timing of their arrival, whether they should have came up sooner, or how long they stay. I want to see the kids play and succeed at this level under this system. When the kids are sent back down, and the injured players return, then we may have a good indication as to what the Islanders need for next year.

This Is Why You Can't Trade Yet....

I've been doing alot of reading on different blogs, and everyone is calling for a sale of the veterans and bringing up the kids now to help the season. Well, that's a nice solution, however, this is the problem:

First: We can only have a certain amount of players on this team. Hence, that is why the youngsters are not up yet until someone like Sillinger is injured or others cannot play. To my knowledge, only Gervais would be allowed to go to the minors without going through the waiver wire. As this season has unfolded, we have needed all of the defenceman used throughout this year, and cannot bring up the forwards.

Now if we were to bring up a youngster, then that would mean that we could lose that veteran to the waiver wire by another team, and since most of the FA's have one year deals, these players would be plucked off the wire as a low risk, high reward, and that would defeat the purpose of trading for draft picks, or prospects in the next three or so weeks.
My point is this: let's get the most out of our vets now if we are going to trade them. If they play well, the better, the trade.

For the people who want to be in a sell mode: You'll need two things for a little while. First is patience. Most teams won't be trading until that week of the trade deadline. Second you need other teams to be involved in trades, and right now, because of cap reasons or players with no trade clauses, it may be hard RIGHT NOW, to take a few of the Islanders players.

Instead of ranting to be in sell mode now, save that for another two weeks when it's the right time to "sell," and actually have some fun and come up with scinarios for the players we do want to trade.

Kings @ Islanders Tonight

The Islanders currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They will likely have to play a solid effort in the season's final two months to keep ahead of the bottom teams.

The Islanders hope to avoid their first six-game home losing streak in seven years Thursday night when they face the Los Angeles Kings. In the first game following the All-Star break, the Islanders spotted Eastern Conference-leading Ottawa a three-goal lead and never rebounded in a 5-2 loss Tuesday.

New York (24-21-6) was hurt by the absence of two regulars - left wing Ruslan Fedotenko and defenseman Andy Sutton - who both were out with the flu.

Sean Bergenheim and Bryan Berard scored for the Islanders, who dropped to 1-3-1 in their past five games overall. They are 0-4-1 in their last five games at the Coliseum, their longest home drought since a seven-game slide from Feb. 27-March 29, 2001.

The Islanders haven't won at home in 2008, as their last victory at the Coliseum came against New Jersey on Dec. 29.

There are still a few player (Sillinger, Berard, and DiPietro) that may not be available to help the Islanders try to end their home skid. All those players did not practice on Wedsnday. Stay tuned for more updates to see if there are any more players either not playing or being called up.

Three Key Players To The Second Half

After watching at least 40 of the Islanders soon to be 50 games this year, this is a team that reminds me of the Devils organization, where defense is first priority, a lot of one goal games, a top netminder, and no matter who is inserted into the lineup, the system is working to the teams benefit. Many believed that this would be another non-playoff year for the Islanders, and quite a few thought the same about the Devils this year as well, but after the first half, the Devils are in first place in the division as of this blog, and with a win tonite will secure a 7th place playoff spot for the Islanders. Not bad for two teams that have the lowest goals produced in the conference.

But the Islanders have three key players that, if they can produce, will not only spark their own confidence, but the rest of the teams as well, and could possibly improve that 7th place standing. The first key player is Ruslan Fedotenko. When Fedotenko scores, the Islanders are 6-2. Trent Hunter, a popular trade rumor around the internet bloggers of Long Island, is having possibly his second best season as an Islander, who is on pace for 42 points, and was recently given an "A" while Brendan Witt was out. If he and Sillinger can get the puck to Fedotenko more, and scores a few, watch the confidence go up in Fedotenko and that whole line. The next key player is Sean Bergenheim. He's only scored 3 goals, but the Islanders are 3-0 when he scores, and no, none of those games were when Fedotenko scored either. He is starting to catch on to the game and has 2 goals in his last 13 games, which is an improvement from the first time he scored in October. The line of Vasicek, Satan and Bergenheim are the best defensive minded line the Islanders have and you'll see the point totals go up for everybody, if Bergenheim gets hot. The third and final key player is Blake Comeau. He has 4 points in his last 8 games and is always improving. Nolan will most likely give him more time on the ice to improve and may actually imrove the goal scoring of a few forwards who could use the goals. If Comeau can get Witt to score, he can get anyone to score.

If these three can step up and improve, watch the points continue to go up, despite the rest of us on our seats, sweating out every one goal game we see this season.

Campoli Next Player Finished

Losing Campoli really hurts. Signing Meyer was a good move for this and next year. I think Johnson needs to now step up he way Meyer did when Witt and Martinek went down. Both Johnson and Meyer can score a few goals, but as long as they both play smart defense, the Islanders should be in good shape. I would really like to see Johnson play a lot of minutes and see some offense form him too. We'll see.

Johnson ToPlay Saturday

Aaron Johnson will get the start on Saturday against the Flyers who will be replacing Campoli. I do like Johnson and his potential on the powerplay, but he's a younger Bergeron, so I'm worried about his physical defensive play. If he can turn a few hits ala Freddy Meyer, and have the defensive prowless, then the Islanders may get away with not having Witt for a game or two.

Bootland for Keith

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -The New York Islanders acquired right wing Matt Keith from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday in exchange for right wing Darryl Bootland.
Keith will report to the Islanders' AHL affiliate in Bridgeport. The 24-year-old Keith has two goals and three assists in 24 career NHL games, all with Chicago. This season, he had five goals and five assists in 34 games for Portland in the AHL.
The 26-year-old Bootland had an assist in four games for the Islanders this season. In 28 games for Bridgeport, he had two goals and eight assists. He has a goal and two assists in 32 career NHL games with Detroit and the Islanders.

My opinion, this is just a small move to replace Comeau in the minor leagues. It may have a small indication towards the trade dealine, but Keith is nothing more than a possible third liner in the NHL which the Islanders have plenty of. Bridgeport is just loading up for the playoffs.

99 Coming Back to Haunt Me

I need to take some of Islanders fans back in time a bit, and also do a little history lesson for some who may not remember. Atleast 10 years ago, The Islanders had the Utah Grizzlies, coached by Butch Goring, as their minor league affiliate, which would be today, Bridgeport. But Utah was never permanent. In fact, back then nothing was permanent on the Island. I'm going to rattle off a few names that, in my opinion, will sound familiar to a few, but needed extra "seasoning" in the minors before being rushed to the NHL, like so many youngsters were back then in this organization: Mark Lawrence, Vlad Cherbeturkin, Vlad Orsagh, Pavel Varobiev, Brad Isbister, Jason Holland. Even if the likes of Connelly, Pyatt, and Jokinen, and Mezei, were in the minors for a season, the Islanders may not have been set back and who knows, what that 2000 draft would have looked like. Now to the present. We have quite a few youngsters already playing right now Both Campoli and Gervais are 23 and Johnson is 24 for the defense. Campoli and Gervais play a ton of minutes and the team has played the most one goal game differentials besides the Devils. When Johnson comes back from injury, it will be like a trade for late in the seaon to help this team. The young offense now playing: Bergenheim 23, Comeau 21. But in Bridgeport you have Tambellini 23, Walter 23, Okposo 19, Colliton 21 all ready and developing . My point is this. As Islanders fans we should be grateful that this year we can say "we're still in the playoff hunt even though we revamped our team and spent MILLIONS LESS to do it." The kids are not going to win us the Cup this year. Period. Keep the kids down until it is neccesary to bring them up or else the younger fans will endure what some of has had to go through 10 years ago.

Bergeron Will Be On The Island Until.........

I think Bergeron will be around on the Islanders until Campoli or one of the younger defensmen steps up on the powerplay, and score more goals. I'm not dicrediting anything that has been said about him, however, in light of hi power-play goals which leads the team, we may have to be patient and wait for someone else to step up.

Thanks Again Dubie

This past week showed us why the Islanders need Dubie. When was the last time there was an Islanders goaltender with a .500 percentage or a winning record in a single season? Yes it is Garth Snow, but he did it in the 2001-2002 season. Snow's record at the end of that season was 10-7-2. So why is this so important? Let's remember a bit here. 2006, the backup was still Snow, but his record was 4-13-1. He was replaced the following year in 2007 by Mike Dunham, who did not make that much of a difference posting a 4-10-3 record. What's my point? The Islanders finally have a goaltender that can backup a team when their superstar goalie goes down. Dubielewicz career is short, but has a winning record at 11-7-1. Not bad, but you know that the players will be behind him if he is to be called upon once more.

Isles Have Shot at The Division

After watching the Islanders beat New Jersey last night, looking at the updated standings, I could not believe how close every team in this division is this year. In my opinion the division is still Pittsburghs' to lose. However, The Penguins record against their own division 4-10-1, and the injury bug continues to hit them. The Devils cannot beat the Islanders, and Rangers, and also have a losing record in their division (6-7-3). The Philadelphia Flyers are still in the hunt, but unless Gange comes back soon, the Flyers may not have enough in the tank to take the division. The Rangers are 10-4-0 against their division foes, three of the loses however come at the hands of the Islanders. The Rangers are looking for more scoring help and chemistry with Jagr. I guess money can't buy you offesnse. Which leaves me with the Islanders. The Injury bug has certainly hit them early this year (see Sim, Johnson, Bates etc), but the Islanders have been no worse then a .500 team this year. The Islanders divisional record is 9-5-0, second only to the Rangers, for now. If they can remain healthy, and the young stars improve in the second half, the division is certianly theirs for the taking.

Merit System Working

Ted Nolans merit system appears to be working in the Islanders favor. With the move to the first line, Richard Park has ignited the Islanders first line of Comrie and Geurin. Bringing up Comeau from Bridgeport, instead of making a trade, was another smart move becasue thanks to his call up, Hilbert has surged, and there is an actuall chemistry on that fourth line. What Islanders fans are not used to seeing is a 3+goal game and multiple lines scoring in one game, which is refreshing. If the Islanders defense can begin scoring on the powerplay, that will give more time to the checking line of Fedotenko, Sillinger, and Hunter to work their magic. The young players are getting better as the year goes on, but look out for Sean Bergenheim in the second half. If he continues his play, not only will he score more, but watch for the second line of Vasicek, and Satan heat up as well.

The Merit System Is Working

Satan Scores First Goal; More To Come

Satan will start scoring more soon enough. Remember fans, he was paired up with Tamby for the beginning of the off-season and the first few games before he got sent down. Satan's now used to Bergenheim, and all they need is someone to start scoring on that line. If the New Jersey game was any sign or indication that the line is gelling and now scoring, this is really going to solidify the team. Imagine if Satan and Vasicek continue what they are doing and Bergenheim can also add in a few? Less pressure on the first line, the line of Sillinger, Geurin, and Hilbert will be able to just take out the opponents first line, and the richard park line can wear everyone else down. Don't trade anybody!!!!!! Let this team grow and develope as the year goes by. Think about it, when was the last time this team this stocked with veterans and rookies? Probably 2002. Tamby may help us in the playoffs, like Trent hunter did in 2002. Don't trade away any talent yet, just watch and have fun.

Berard Signs; Sim Out

Let's see now. Losing Meyer, gaining Berard equals an improved defense and powerplay. Watch for Berard to be on the powerplay with Bergeron, but not a lot of ice time during a five on five. Bringing Berard in will most certainly improve a powerplay that has already looked good so far. However, at even strength, you want the defensive pairing that is out there now, especially Campoli and Gervais, whom both have looked very good early on. Losing Sim for a while means it's time to see what Tambellini can do. Leave him on the second line with Vasicek, and Satan. If he doesn't score, he may be able to get Satan to finish off a score by getting to the rebound. This will also let the Islanders see what Tamby can do in the NHL and see if he's worth keeping around.

This Preseason So Far

After watching this team now for a little over a week thanks to the new Islanders TV, I can say that the Islanders are bonding and developing chemistry very quickly, which was needed for them to suceed. They showed toughness, and resilancy against the Rangers, and they also sent a message that they will not be pushed around this season. As far as the youth development, much praise has been given to Tambellini, Comeau, and Colliton, along with defenseman Aaron Johnson. There is enough depth once again on this team going all the way to the minors, in case there are injuries. Berard has shown he is a positive factor on the power play, and should make the team. The Islanders play the Devils tonight, which should be an excellent game since there is a mutual respect for one another. Expect to hear more good things coming from the first line once again (Tank,Comrie, and Guerin), and the emergances of Sim and Vasicek. Make no mistake about it, The Islanders are not going to be at the bottom of this conference, and will once again prove to many others, and earn the respect they deserve.

Preseason Is Here

I think it's safe to say that the first line will be Fedotenko, Comrie, and Guerin. That line will be depended on for this seasons success. From what i've been reading, Tamby is looking good at this camp, and is fighting for the second line against Jon Sim. Too early for now, but I think Tamby would look good with Vasicek and Satan. The one line that should remain intact is the Hilbert-Sillinger-Hunter line. That was the most consistent line the Islanders had last year, and I think you'll see a better year from both Hunter and Hilbert. The fourth line will be changing the most, and probably wont be "solid" until mid October or early November. Camp, injuries, and suspensions will determine who plays on that fourth line. As for the defense, you can pencil in the obvious ones. Witt, Bergeron, Martinek, Sutton, Campoli. Gervais is a Nolan player, so he should make the team, while Berard, if healthy, can replace the numbers lost by Tom Poti. This is a big year for the defence. They have the potential of a lot of power play goals, and if they stick to the new defensive system, this could be the making of something big on Long Island. I won't put my predictions in yet until the night before the first opening game against Buffalo. Until then, time to watch and enjoy.

Berard To Practice With Islanders

Well now, this should be an interesting camp. I think, when healthy, Berard is still a top 4 forward, and could replace Poti's numbers from last year. However, he's been having Martinek like numbers when it comes to playing full seasons. Is Berard good enough to make the team?Yes, he is. That would leave Freddy Meyer the lone defenseman out of the loop here. But the nice idea about having Berard on the team, assuming he makes it, is that like the forwards, Nolan will play anyone on defense who is playing the way they should, and if Berard needs a break, can be replaced by Campoli and Gevais and then Berard can be used over a longer stretch in less minutes per game. Having someone like Berard on the team would certainly help their powerplay, along with Bergeron, and his booming shot. Now we'll have to see and wait what happens during camp. Stay tuned.

Vasicek Signs With Islanders

Signs one year deal. Diamond in the rough is my opinion on this guy. Dave Scatchard type player: physical, two-way, and plays gritty. Could have a scoring touch with the right players around him. Will be very difficult around the net also.

Sutton An Islander

Now that Andy Sutton is an Islander, don't expect the Islanders to pursue another defenceman this offseason. So where do they get the points missing from Tom Poti? Campoli and Gervais should be able to handle the load assuming they stay healthy, and if Meyer sees more ice time, he may help as well. There has been talk of the Islanders need for another center. Looking at the depth of the team, the next third center would be Hilbert in front of Bates who would be on the fourth line. At this point, I've read about Vasicek, Allison, and possibly Forsberg. For now, I'll say forget Forsberg, but it's nice to dream. Vasicek or Allison would be an upgrade to Hilbert, who should really play along side Sillinger and Hunter for one more season. This center will be paired with Satan and Sim, assuming the forementioned line stays intact. The Islanders need a Dave Scatchard type of center, scrappy, physical, and two-way. That points to Vasicek who is also younger than Allison, and does have more potential in the now. Allison however, if healthy, could be a point per game center and could improve his wingers goal production as well. Any move Snow makes will only improve the offense.

What's Next For The Isles?

Now that Hunter has been signed to a one year contract, i'm curious to see what other plans are in store this offseason with the Islanders. Looking at this roster I can't see the Islanders being finished. Last year they did sign Sean Hill and Kozlov very late in the off season, and Islander fans should expect that same philosophy this year. First, let's address what the Islanders currently need. From looking at the current roster, a top four defensman, and a center at the forward positions. Once again hearing rumblings about McCabe coming to Long Island. For now, i dont know if i like that idea. Toronto is so cap heavy it'll be difficult for them to sign anybody else during the season should they falter. I've read in numerous articles that Stajan is a avialable, but the Islanders don't have enough to give back to Toronto. I certainly am not in favor of trading either Campoli or Gervais, so let's see about the unrestricted free agents. On defence, there's really only four I would think the Islanders would consider: Markov, Sutton, Berard, and Tanabe. Any one of those would help out the Islanders this season, even short term. Now for the centers. Vasicek, and Scatchard are available, but injuries have slowed them down. A couple of sleepers could be, Jamie Lundmark, or Kris Beech (my pick between the two). All in all not a lot to choose from, but would improve the team. For now we ponder, and wait........

Hunter Goes For Arbitration

Hunter and the Islanders went to the arbitrator to see how much of a raise he will recieve for this year. I was reading a few articles that Snow wanted to sign him to a long term deal but Hunter was not intrested. Hunter should get a raise from last year but it certainly wont break the Islanders bank. Hopefully, the Isles can sign Hunter long term as the season continues.

Will Markov Sign?

I usually try to avoid rumors, but this one is interesting considering this was one player I was hoping the Islanders would sign this offseason. There have been heavy rumors that the Islanders are close to signing him. By signing Markov to a contract, I think that would take care of the defense at least for the first half of the season. The Islanders need to let Campoli, and Gervais, and even Meyer play more games to really see the potential out of these players, and I'm one of those fans who does not like to see any more prospects traded so they can prosper somewhere else. The Islanders still have enough cap space to sign Markov, and then concentrate on the offense. Could The Islanders be looking at a restricted free agent going into arbitration? Possibly. The Islanders can resign Hunter, and can still make a pitch to any free agent that a certain team can no longer afford. If the Islanders cannot pry a restricted free agent from another team look for someone like Josef Vasicek to be signed. Third line forward, possibly second, Nolan-type player with offensive upside.

Chris Simon Signs

The Islanders signed Chris Simon to a one year $475,000 contract yesterday. He will recieve bonuses if he plays a certain amount of games for the season. I've been reading a lot of comments from other fans, and they are mixed indeed. Most say it was a good move to resign. I agree with them. I think Simons role will be limited however this year. If the Islander fans remember, he was put on the first line with Yashin and Blake. That did not pan out as well as hoped, which is why Asham also saw time on the first line. This year a first line has been established with the recent aquisitions, so Simon will be in a checking role, and defending his teammates. Some fans have asked me, what about Tambellini? Tambellini, will probably make the team this year. Where do the Islanders put him? Look for the third line with Hilbert and Hunter for now assuming that the Islanders dont sign anyone on offense. Simon will get playing time, but it will be limited, and depending on injuries will probably play against the "enforcer" teams.

Just looking over the players at NewYorkIslanders.com and noticed that Trent Hunter is not on that list......stay tuned.

DiPietro Learns The Hard Way....Again

When we lose, we blame DiPietro. When we win, we praise him. That is why he alone is responible for the Islanders playoff push and future. Yes, Jason Smyth and the rest of the Islanders will have to do their part, but in the end, the puck must go through DiPietro in the net for the other teams to win. DiPietro must grow up after this "loss" to St. Louis. Give credit where it's due, the Blues worked for their two points, but when your goalie holds a stick and thinks he wont get caught, is not acceptable this time of the year. DiPietro must remain focused and discliplined if he wants any success this year. Should he be blamed for losing the game? No, this is a team sport, and his fellow teamates also did not perform well those last three minutes of the game and deserve the same treatment. Should DiPietro be blamed for that last goal? Most definitly. Most Islander fans will almost surley have his head if he attempts to do that in the playoffs. Note to Rick: Play smart, and learn from your mistakes, and don't repeat what happened last night.

Smyth An Islander

Not official, but Islanders have dealt former picks O'Marra, Nilsson, and this years first rounder for Smyth.

This puts the Islanders ahead of a lot of teams, and it doesnt matter where they finish in the top 8 because they're now contenders. More analysis coming shortly.

Perreault Returns To Toronto

Toronto aquires Yanic Perreault from the Coyotes for Brendan Bell and a second round pick in 2008.

This will help Toronto in their faceoffs as Perreault is the best there is, and he can still score.

Buffalo Gets Zubrus

The Buffalo Sabres made a splash aquiring Dainus Zubrus, and a prospect from Washington for Jiri Novotny, and a 1st round pick.

With the injuries to the Sabres, Zubrus will be slated in the top six forwards. This should help them win first place in the conference and very dangerous in the playoffs.

Atlanta Adds Another Defenseman

Atlanta gets Pascal Dupuis from the Rangers for a prospect.

Atalta has done a good job making a statement that thy're playoff bound this year.

Bertuzzi A Wing

Former Islander Todd Bertuzzi has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings from the Florida Panthers.

If i'm a hockey fan, i'd be watching the Western Conference in the playoffs this year.

Ducks Make Minor Move So Far

Ducks aquire forward Brad May from Colorado.

Ottawa Adds Depth

Ottawa recieves Forward Oleg Saprykin and a 7th rd pick from Phoenix for a 2nd round pick.

This is a depth for the playoffs move and you can never have enough depth.

Ward To Rangers

Aaron Ward is traded from the Rangers to the Boston Bruins. Rangers get Paul Mara.

This certainly helps the Bruins defense as Ward was a distraction in the Rangers locker room. I feel that Ward is a better fit in Boston and will produce better in Boston. Mara will be a good depth defenseman for the Rangers.

Guerin To Sharks

Bill Guerin has been traded to San Jose from St. Louis. As of now a 1st round pick and future considerations.

This was the trade eveyone has been waiting for. Let's find out what kind of effect this will have with Blake, if any.

Pittsburgh Just Got Tougher

Penguins aquired Forward George Laraque from Pheonix for Dan Carcillo, and an 8th round pick.

Update!!! 12:35pm Penguins send Dominic Moore to the Minnesota Wild for a 3rd round draft pick in this years draft.


Crosby now has protection in case anyone trys to go after him. Still doesnt fill their need for more defensive help though.

Biron To Philly...Conklin To Buffalo

Buffalo trades Biron to Philly for an undisclosed draft pick. Also Ty Conklin now traded to Buffalo.

Buffalo has extra cap room now with Biron gone. Great move by Philly and if they can sign Biron to a lomg term deal, this team has turned themselves around and should look good next season.

Roberts A Penguin

Roberts waived the no-trade clause to play with Cosby and company in Pitsburgh.

I've noticed that a lot of Eastern teams are getting better on offense right now. Atlanta got both defense and offense, but the focus really has been on offense.

Three Way Trade

Wings get Kyle Calder, Chicago gets Jason Williams, and Philly gets Kukkonen.

The Wings get experience in Calder, Chicago gets younger and promising Williams while Philly continues to rebuild by getting Kukkonen a possible top six defensman.

Blake Going To Anaheim, & Now Detroit

I know that basically the top Western Conference teams are in the hunt for Blake. However, it's been said that Nashville, Vancouver, Detroit, San Jose and Dallas all have interest. From another "source" of mine, the Islanders are ready to trade Jason Blake to the Ducks. Please stay tuned...

UPDATE!!! IF the Ducks cannont get there hands on Geurin, then Blake is their next option. But who will they give up? sounds like a first rounder. But I would like to see the Isles get their kid Cory Perry.

UPDATE!!! This coming from the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings are still looking around for more depth in the hopes of adding another forward before this afternoon’s NHL trade deadline. The New York Islanders have called and offered Jason Blake; he doesn’t have much size (he’s listed as 5-foot-10) but he put the puck in the net 29 times in 62 games this season.

Smolinski & Sopel To Vancouver

Vancouver Canucks acquire Bryan Smolinski from Chicago for a 2007, 2nd round draft pick.

This will only help out the Canucks. Being a former Islander and have watched him play, he should be a good playmaking center for the Canucks. The one thing that has me going in the trades right now are just really draft picks, and other than St. Louis made a big splash getting quite a bit for Tkachuk everyone else is just a second rounder.....more trades to come....enjoy.

The Vancouver Canucks Have re-acquired defenceman Brent Sopel from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a second and fourth round picks.

Well I think that should solidify what Vancouver was in need for. Both former Islanders should be a big support to the Canucks chances, and do make them cup contenders.

Zednik Is An Islander

Washington just traded Richard Zednik to the Islanders for a 2007 second round pick.

Well this means one of two things Islanders fans: One...he'll replace Blake on the first line cause Blake is on the verge of being traded. Two....he'll be on the first line with Blake and Yashin, and that could be a nice first line if Zednik gels with his new line mates. Zednik, when healthy, can produce 20+ goals a year and could be a force on a powerplay. More analysis after the trade deadline is over, but dont be surprised f the Blake rumors continue for now.

What A Wave Of Players

the following players have been placed on waivers: "Michael Leighton - Flyers, Denis Hamel - Thrashers, Jason Krog - Rangers, Niko Kapanen - Thrashers, Marc Chouinard - Canucks, Aaron Downey - Canadiens, Brian Boucher - Blackhawks, Bryan Berard - Blue Jackets, Petr Cajanek - Blues" according to TSN.

This is only marketable for teams who actually have room in there cap to aquire these players. It will be really interesting to see who picks up these players.

Trade Deadline News

Starting now, and up until the trade deadline is over, I will be helping cover the trades that go on. Please stay tuned for the latest news, and trades that are made.

Quick note on the Rivet trade: Montreal did aquire a number one draft pick, which certainly means that Montreal is not done dealing yet, and may be in pursuit of another "big" name player. Another good guess, is that with Rivet's contract no longer in Montreal, could be a sign that Montreal may try to sign Souray sooner rather than later.

Blake To Be Traded

Lets also remember fans that Yashin is returning soon from his knee injury, and there are only two players in this organization who can play with him: Blake and Nilsson. Having Yashin back is like a major trade that never happened but will help the team. If you trade Blake now, and that first line doesnt gell, this could be a short post season. Snow must be very careful who he wants for Blake. Draft picks/prospects dont help a first line right now, they're good for the future, which this team already has. If Snow does pull the trigger, make sure it's for a top six forward, preferably a winger who can score. What also doesnt make sense is that if the Islanders are trading for offense, which is what they need, why are we giving up our top goal scorer this season? Are we gonna rely on Nilsson to suddenly put up big numbers when he gets here. Do the Islanders want to risk that? Another question into consideration is will this next person be able to play with Yashin? My best example: Miro Satan. The Islanders brought him here for Yashin and it never really panned out. Fans will have to watch what happens next, but I dont see the Islanders trading Blake.

Ride The Wave

Before the season started, most columnists and hockey "experts" had the Islanders going dead last in the conference, possibly the league. The only two people to save the season were Nolan and DiPietro. Now that the Islanders are not even close to the cellar and are possible post season bound, the same two men will be the ones that the rest of the team will ride with. DiPietro will start against Toronto and Montreal, he'll demand it. So scratch off Dunham starting. Nolan will continue to work his players and the Islanders will soon be getting ready for the post season.
Now about the trade for Bergeron. A day after he was traded to the Islanders, Martinek was lost for the year, so Snow had to have known in advance that he needed to make that trade. If Nolan continues to work with Bergeron, he'll improve in the system. For the exception of this year, he as been on the plus side for his defense. Grebeshkov has shown promise, but not at the NHL level. We needed someone to replace Martinek and win now.

Another Move On The Way?

Glad Snow finally made a trade, and a good one. Now he has maybe one more to go. In all honesty since going 6-2-2 in the last 10 games, including Pitt today, eventually getting Yashin back will be like making a trade. Many of you already think that Blake does work well with Yashin, so why not keep both, and make one more trade for that winger that we're all craving for? That would give the Islanders four solid lines that could really make it difficult for any team to beat us. I'd hate to ruin the speculation but i dont forsee Blake leaving anytime soon, he's the only one working with Yash. You know if Blake wants to stay loyal with the Islanders, Wang will resign him. Having said that....Look for the Islanders to make one more trade for the forward to play along side Yashin and Blake. The Islanders do have quite a few defenseman on their team so the obvious thought is that one of them will be dealt. But this blogger will not get into speculations.

Make The Trade Now

If Garth Snow wants to make a trade, do it now. Whoever he wants to get, make the trade before the Islanders start on their 7 game home stretch. The Islanders have three great lines with Tambellini, Kozlov and Satan. There is no need for a second line center at this point with Tambellini forming a great mix on that line. Go for the big gun Snow, just dont trade away the farm. Ever since Yashin went out with the knee injury, everyone has contributed. Now its time to get someone in for Blake and Yashin when he returns so the Islanders really have a legitimate scoring first line. Okay now I have mentioned before who we should get, but if I had to go for two guys with the most availablilty right now, it would be Guerin or Anson Carter. I think Guerin could be a great "dream" move and if the Islanders aquired him, this is a post first round team in the playoffs. Carter is the wild card. When Carter is on, he finds the back of the net often, but he's not as physical as he should be. Either way, he's a better fit for a first line then Chris Simon is. Carter may also be more affordable then Guerin as well. But if the Islanders really want to make a statement in this years playoffs, then get a big gun winger and do it now. This team is ready to break out and make a big push during the homestand and need the firepower now.

Buyers Or Sellers

The Islanders sit 4 points behind Carolina for the 8th seed in the conference as of this post, and are currently undefeated in regulation going 4-0-3. They play Philly tonight, which should help the Islanders in the standings. The question is simple: Should the Islanders be buyers or sellers? My answer is.....buyers, but i think the Islanders should look at low-risk, high reward player(s), or in hockey terms, a rental player(s). So what do the Islanders need then if they are to be buyers? Garth Snow has already indicated a second line center and a winger for the top line. Defense according to him from Newsday, said he likes the defense as it is with the return of Poti, and Gervais returning. I think with the unrestrited free agents out there, the Islanders most pressing need would be a top winger. Ther're a ton of wingers out there, but I think the Islanders will persue the following: Bertuzzi, Geuren, Lapointe, Carter, Doan, and maybe Modin. Yeah I know big splash there. The problem is, the teams trading these players will want more in return then the players worth. That's why bringing up someone like Jeff Tambellini from the minors is a good move for now. The kid has 3 points in 3 games, ride with the kid and maybe you wont need to trade for one of those big name wingers. As far as a second line ceneter goes depends on the winger the Islanders get in the trade. The Islanders should look at bringing back a former Islander: Bryan Smolinski, or...... yes, i'm saying this, Pierre Turgeon. Smolinski, Satan, Kozlov will definitly have teams paying attention to that line. If Smoliski is not available, or if we get a star winger, and need an inexpensive rental, and probably sell a few more tickets at the coliseum to give him a fond farewell, then I think the Islanders should go after Turgeon. He's been a healthy scratch in Colorado, and would only be worth a low draft pick in this years draft. He knows the atmosphere at the coliseum during the playoffs, and will defenitly give the fans something to watch. Now, i know Snow is not really looking for blueline help, but i would love to see if he could pick up Bryan Berard for the playoffs. He hasnt played at all this year, would prob be worth another pick, and Berard can at least come back for the playoffs, and showcase what he still has left. Berard would certainly help out on a powerplay that has not been great with scoring defensman on this team, and Berard would only be used on the third defensive pairing when Martinek returns, so Berard wont be under a lot pressure coming in. The Islanders would be more solid with Berard in the lineup than Gervais. If the Islanders do get players of this caliber, then they will give Buffalo or New Jersey a run for their money in the playoffs. But this should not hurt the core of the team, and if the Islanders do lose in the first round, then they would've only given up low round picks, and nothing else....depending on if the Islanders get a top name winger of course.......stay tuned.
